Guided tours for school groups

Visit the exhibition À bras-le-corps ! Savants et instruments au Collège de France au XIXe siècle - fromApril29 toJuly5  2024

We offer guided tours adapted to the level of your class. Visits are free, but booking is required.

The exhibition highlights the research carried out in the institution to measure, understand and care for the human and animal body. It features a selection of some fifty historic scientific instruments preserved at the Collège de France, complemented by loans from several institutions.

The exhibition offers an original perspective on the history of experimental science from the French Revolution to 1920, at the intersection of physics, physiology and psychology. In a profoundly renewed scientific landscape, research is also becoming increasingly specialized.

The exhibition takes a broad view of the careers of the scientists who left their mark on the history of science and technology - Claude Bernard, Étienne-Jules Marey, Arsène D'Arsonval, Georges Demenÿ and François-Franck - but also highlights the important and indispensable role played by their collaborators, scientific teams and instrument builders. The role of women scientists is also highlighted, with an analysis of the muscular effort of athletes at the 1900 Olympic Games, measured by Jósefa Joteyko, the first female professor to hold a prestigious annual chair at the Collège de France, as she was succeeded a few years later by Albert Einstein.

Duringtheir visit, accompanied by a mediator, students will discover the four main themes of the exhibition:

  • A history of physiology
  • The body in motion
  • Electricity between medicine and industry
  • From body to mind

A final section is devoted to the instrument manufacturers who not only produced, but also designed their own devices.

To accompany the presentation, students will have access to a number of manipulations to help them better understand the concepts. For example, they can reconstruct Claude Bernard's experiments on liver glycemia, observe the decomposition of movement explored by Étienne-Jules Marey, or discover Charles-Émile François-Franck's research into emotional expression with patients from the Villejuif asylum or professional actors.
