  • 1956-1962 : Studied medicine and chemistry in Frankfurt/Main and Munich
  • 1959-1961 : Medical thesis at the Institute of Chemistry, University of Frankfurt/Main
  • 1962 : Doctorate in medicine, Master's degree in chemistry

Professional career

  • 1962-1963 : Postdoctoral training at the Institut Pasteur, Paris, in the laboratory of P. Grabar
  • 1964-1966 : Assistant Professor at the Institute of Genetics, University of Cologne
  • Since 1966 : Head of the Immunology Department at the Institute of Genetics, University of Cologne
  • 1969 : EMBO Senior Fellow at the National Institute of Medical Research, London, in the laboratory of N.A. Mitchison
  • 1970 : Professor of Molecular Genetics at the Institute of Genetics, University of Cologne
  • 1970 : Member of the Executive Board of the Institute of Genetics
  • 1995-1996 : Visiting Professor at the Collège de France, holding the annual European Chair
