As the cult of Saint Joseph developed and expanded in the wake of the triumphant Mariology movement, a rich iconography gave the patron saint of the universal Church an ever-greater place. While taking up previously established models and roles, it was amplified and diversified, making the humble Joseph a rival figure to his illustrious wife. Throughout thetwentiethcentury, Joseph's presence has been asserted in the names of churches, and Pope Francis, who has dedicated the Vatican City to him, has devoted particular devotion to him since the beginning of his pontificate, inaugurated on March 19, 2013, St. Joseph's Day.
