Serge Haroche, born in 1944, is Professor Emeritus at the Collège de France and a member of the Académie des Sciences. A former student at the École normale supérieure (ENS), he obtained his doctorate in physics in 1971. He was Professor at Paris VI (1975-2001), then Professor at the Collège de France, from 2001 to 2015, in the Quantum Physics Chair. He was administrator of this institution from 2012 to 2015.
Serge Haroche conducted his research at the ENS Kastler Brossel laboratory. His work focuses on atomic physics and quantum information. He pioneered Quantum Cavity Electrodynamics, the field of quantum optics that studies the behavior of atoms coupled to photons confined in a box formed by ultra-reflective mirrors. Serge Haroche has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the CNRS Gold Medal (2009) and the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2012.
