Abstract

There is a general feeling that the teaching of mathematics in France is in crisis : international studies show that our students have an average, even mediocre level, and that it is in continuous decline. Social and gender inequalities weigh particularly heavily.

We will be looking at :

  • the distribution of performance : many very weak pupils, and few good ones ;
  • the contradiction between weak students and strong research ;
  • the specificity of mathematics in relation to other fields ;
  • the place of mathematics in the general cultural and institutional context.
