The years 2050 and 2100 still seem a long way off for our fellow citizens, but the scientists who are already visualizing the impact of our activities on today's climatic equilibrium also have a vision of future horizons much further away, from a few centuries to several millennia. Whether or not we should be concerned about these major disruptions in the very long term is a difficult and complex ethical choice. On this question, science gives us the means to take the full measure of the human footprint on the Earth's environmental balance, and to realize our power to alter this trajectory through informed choices. This means finding long-term solutions for energy production and storage, but also taking into account the changes that will affect health, nutrition and demographics.
