The history of human societies can be a source of inspiration in the face of climate change. Indeed, the long history of humanity is a perpetual story of adaptation and resilience, with its examples of both success and failure. Nevertheless, the evolution of societies should not be viewed solely in terms of climate change. Climate change is not the only way to interpret the development and collapse of past civilizations. This discussion will therefore seek to put the long view back into our current history by revisiting the various crises humanity has gone through, but without imposing our past on our present or our future.
