The fifth lecture then turned to a close analysis of the arguments deployed, both against Ryle and in favor of intellectualism, starting with the linguistic arguments proposed by Stanley and Williamson. The latter show that there is no particular reason to make a syntactic or semantic distinction between two propositions such as:

(1) Hannah knows how to ride a bicycle.

(2) Hannah knowsthat penguinswaddle.
