Abstract

The Human GenomeProject ushered in the era of modern human genetics, providing key insights into the structure and content of the genome. However, when it comes to the extent of genetic diversity between individuals or populations, sequencing the human genome initially yielded little information. This is why several international consortia have been set up to characterize genetic variation across a wide range of human populations. This lecture will show how these studies have made it possible to characterize the different types of genetic variants and their geographical distribution, providing crucial information for medical genetics research.
