The 2024 lecture discusses the physical parameters that determine cell volume, taking into account osmotic, mechanical, chemical and metabolic aspects. An important aspect concerns the validity of what biologists call cellular scaling laws, which relate cell volume to the dry mass of the cell or to the volume of cellular compartments (organelles). Particular attention will be paid to the volume of the nucleus, the coupling between cell volume and the cell cycle, and the effect of the cell environment, such as confinement effects.
