Thematic tour

This visit is designed and organized in conjunction with the teacher's educational project. Teachers are offered personalized support to help them prepare their project.

Under its motto Docet Omnia, the Collège de France is a multi-disciplinary teaching center for " research in the making ". This cross-disciplinary approach, combined with the constant renewal of its activities, means that students can tackle themes in a wide range of research fields, from the experimental sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, computer science, astronomy) to the humanities (history, literature, law, economics, philosophy, anthropology).

The proposed tour combines a historical presentation of this place of memory and knowledge with time for exchange and dialogue with scientific teams from the Collège de France institutes and laboratories about their research and professional careers.

The thematic tour also provides an opportunity to work in greater depth on the past or present figure of a Collège de France professor, with access to the institution's archives and rich heritage.

Exhibition

Wines, oils and perfumes : an archaeological journey around the ancient Mediterranean
october 28 2024 - January 31 2025

Black-figured amphora with harvest scene. AM 1008. - 2019 Musée du Louvre, Dist. GrandPalaisRmn/Hervé Lewandowski.

Jean-Pierre Brun, an archaeologist with a passion for the techniques and economies of antiquity, has spent almost fifty years excavating sites such as Pompeii. His research plunges us into the daily life of the Romans and the cultural diversity of their immense empire.

The exhibition invites visitors to explore the world of archaeology and the profession of archaeologist through a selection of precious objects and models illustrating the production and trade of products such as oil, wine and perfume.

Visits to the exhibition take place at two Collège de France sites :

  • Marcelin Berthelot (11 place Marcelin-Berthelot, 75231 Paris), featuring ceramics, bronzes and glass from the Louvre's Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities.
  • Institute of Civilizations (52 rue du Cardinal-Lemoine, 75005 Paris), accessible in around 10 minutes on foot, this site highlights the work of archaeologists across four major geographical areas, offering students an in-depth understanding of the issues involved in the discoveries. By mobilizing their senses, touching, smelling and handling materials and products from the period, students will gain a better understanding of how archaeologists interpret traces of the past.

Accompanied by a guide-lecturer, and using materials produced by our partner Inrap, students will explore the different stages of an excavation site and the diversity of professions associated with archaeology. Through observation and hands-on experience, they'll learn about manufacturing processes and the use of objects, as well as methods for dating and reconstructing artifacts.

We offer guided tours adapted to the level of your class. Visits are free, but booking is essential.
