  • 1961 : " Diplômé " in mathematics, applied mathematics and physics at the University of Heidelberg
  • 1964 : " Dissertation ", University of Heidelberg with thesis Über straffe Funktionale
  • 1958-1966 : Teaching and research assistant, then lecturer at Heidelberg University (Institute of Applied Mathematics, then Department of Economics)
  • 1966-1968 : Visiting Associate Professor, University of California (Berkeley)
  • 1968-1976 : Research Professor, University of Louvain
  • Since 1969 : Professor of Economics and Director of the Wirtschaftstheoretisches Institut at the University of Bonn
  • Since 1970 : Visiting Professor at Berkeley (four times )
  • 1993-1994 : Visiting Professor at the Collège de France, holding the annual European Chair
