Sayaka Oki is Professor of History of Science and Education at the University of Tokyo. She received her doctorate from the University of Tokyo, after completing a D.E.A. at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in France. Her main fields of research are the history of science and the socio-economic history of scientific academic institutions in Europe. Recently, she has broadened her field of study to include the intellectual history of academic freedom. She is the author of numerous books and articles in Japanese, French and English. She is an associate member of the Science Council of Japan and of the Committee for Freedom and Responsibility in Science of the International Science Council .
