Education and professional career

  • Philosophy and Khâgne at Lycée Henri IV (Alain's pupil)
  • 1932: École normale supérieure
  • Agrégation in History
  • Doctorat ès Lettres (thesis: "the economic and social foundations of the political history of the paris region in the mid-19th century")
  • Professor at the Institut d'Études Politiques: teaching of twentieth-century history and various other lectures: population issues; cinema and civilizations
  • Historical researcher at the Institut d'études démographiques
  • 1952-1981: Professor at the Collège de France, chair History and social structures of Paris and the Paris region
  • 1953: Advisor to several prefects of the Seine department for around ten years, the first being Préfet Émile Pelletier. Commission des sites, etc.
  • 1959: Responsible for the Humanities on the Comité des 12 de la Recherche Scientifique created by General de Gaulle (see "Scientific Research and Humanities" in "Population" 1959, no. 3)
  • 1961: Creation and President of the International Center for the Study of Human Problems in Monaco
  • 1982: Louis Chevalier's Paris archives, prior to 1968, deposited with the Yale University Library, Department of Manuscripts and Archives
