In autumn 2021, the exhibition "Le papyrus dans tous ses États, de Cléopâtre à Clovis" (Papyrus in all its states, from Cleopatra to Clovis), curated by Prof. Jean-Luc Fournet and organized at the Collège de France with the support of BRED and in partnership with the magazines L'Histoire and Télérama, brought together in the grand foyer of the Collège de France some sixty items dating from ancient Egypt to the early Middle Ages, presenting the history of what for several millennia was the essential medium for writing throughout the Mediterranean.
Without forgetting Egypt and the Orient, the exhibition also highlighted the lesser-known uses of papyrus in Europe: in addition to a papyrus from Herculaneum that survived the eruption of Vesuvius and a decision by the Byzantine emperor Theodosius II, visitors were treated to masterpieces illustrating the use of papyrus in France, such as the deeds of Dagobert and Clovis II.
Today, we invite you to experience or relive the visit to this exhibition, but this time from a distance, using a smartphone, computer or even a virtual reality headset.
