The opening lecture took place on Thursday, January 17, 2008. Published by Fayard, available in bookshops and from the Collège de France reception desk.

A former student at the École polytechnique, member of the Académie des sciences and the Académie des technologies, researcher at the École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris and at INRIA from 1970 to 2000, Gérard Berry is currently Scientific Director of Esterel Technologies. His scientific contributions cover three main areas : lambda calculus and functional programming, parallel and real-time programming, and computer-aided design of synchronous integrated circuits. He is the creator of the Esterel programming language.
