The International Law of Regional Organizations

Hybrid research workshop organized by Samantha Besson

The mandate of the International Law Association (ILA) Study Group (SG) on the International Law of Regional Organizations (2021-2024; co-chaired by Samantha Besson and Eva Kassoti) is to clarify and evaluate, by comparison, the contours of internal and external practice of international law specific to regional international organizations (RIOs). It will lead to the publication of a general report drafted by the study group's co-rapporteurs (Fernando L. Bordin & Jed Odermatt). In parallel with the study group's work, a collective book project was launched in 2022. This book has two   objectives: on the one hand, to give academic prominence to the comparative international law work carried out by deepening certain comparative aspects of the project, and on the other, to deal with more theoretical questions that could not be addressed within the framework of the study group. The volume will be structured in two parts : the chapters in the first part address some of the general and cross-cutting issues raised by the development of FBOs for the future of international law, while the second part of the book deals, from both an intra-regional and inter-regional comparative angle, with different dimensions of international FBO law practice. The workshop on December 8-9 2022 in Paris is the first of two workshops organized to discuss these draft chapters and regional thematic reports. The next workshop will be held at the Asser Institute in The Hague in January 2024.
