Professor Pierre Corvol, who held the Chair of Experimental Medicine from 1989 to 2012, has devoted his work to uncovering the hormonal mechanisms that regulate blood pressure.
His early molecular biology work focused on the various components of the renin system, and established the crucial role of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in controlling hydro-sodal metabolism and renal and cardiac function by inhibiting or inactivating this system in genetically modified animals.
His research has made a major contribution to our understanding of how the renin system regulates blood pressure, and to the development of treatments currently used to treat hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Patrick Flandrin, CNRS Research Director at the École normale supérieure de Lyon, has been elected Vice-Chairman for 2019-2020.
