Opening of the year of chemistry from school to university

President of the Comité National de la Chimie and professor at the Collège de France, Clément Sanchez opened the year of chemistry from school to university on October 4, 2018, at the Lycée Pierre-Gilles de Gennes (Paris).

The 2018-2019 school year has been designated by the French Ministry of Education, in association with the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, as the Year of Chemistry, from school to university.

This operation is supported by France Chimie, CNRS, CEA, the Société chimique de France, the Fondation de la Maison de la Chimie and the Comité national de la chimie via its partner members. Next year, France will be hosting a number of exceptional international events linked to the world of chemistry : the 51st International Chemistry Olympiad, the centenary of IUPAC and its 47th International Chemistry Congress, and the opening of the International Year of the Periodic Table of the Elements.

The three main events

  1. IUPAC 2019
2019 will celebrate the Centenary of theInternational Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), founded in Paris in 1919. France, represented at IUPAC by the CNC, was chosen in 2013 at the Istanbul GA to organize both the 47th World Chemistry Congress and the Union's Centenary celebration, to be held from July 7 to 12, 2019.
there will be 27 symposia in all, hopefully attended by around 4,000 participants. Three major themes will form the backbone of the Congress: chemistry and (Life, Energy, Environment), to which will be added a series of symposia dealing with cross-cutting aspects of chemistry, chemistry and education, chemistry and society, history of chemistry, young chemists' symposium. Two industrial symposia: Sustainable chemistry, materials and resources for the city of the 2050s. Challenges and innovations for the chemical industry in the 2050s, a third WCLM symposium in which top executives from the world's leading chemical and chemical-using companies will present their visions, perspectives and challenges. We hope that this symposium celebrating IUPAC's centenary will be a unique event.
The most official events will take place at the Palais des Congrès, the Maison de la Chimie, the Sorbonne and the Mairie de Paris, under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic and the patronage of the City of Paris.
  2. The International Olympiad
France will host the 51st International Chemistry Olympiad in Paris in July 2019. These initiatives are coordinated by Anne Szymczak, Inspectrice Générale de l'Education Nationale.
  3. International Year of the Periodic Table
The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table of the Elements (Dmitri Mendeleev, 1869). The periodic table is a kind of chemist's alphabet.
The aim of this action is to raise global awareness of the importance of the basic sciences, and to strengthen knowledge and research and development in this field, with the emphasis on improving living conditions in developing countries.
In the run-up to the 150th anniversary of Dmitri Mendeleev's periodic table and the opening of the International Year of the Periodic Table of the Elements, France Chimie and the Société Chimique de France are launchingÉlémentarium.fr, a website offering a new way of exploring the periodic table of the elements. Designed for schoolchildren, students and teachers, it offers a fun and interactive way of understanding the place and role of the elements in our daily lives.
