march 8 - International Women's Rights Day

Françoise Héritier's opening lecture online

To mark International Women's Rights Day, the Collège de France has released a video recording from its archives of Françoise Héritier's opening lecture, delivered on February 25 1983.

The second woman to be appointed professor at the Collège de France, Françoise Héritier held the  chairComparative study of African societies from 1982 to 1998, at the same time as heading the Laboratoire d'anthropologie sociale. An exemplary and committed researcher, her life offers, according to the tribute paid by Philippe Descola in 2018 on the occasion of her death " an uncommon example of the alliance between remarkable scientific acuity, a determination as gentle as it was unshakeable, and a rare generosity towards all those to whom she lavished her lectures, advice and friendship. "

Opening symposium 2024 : " Gender and science "

The Collège de France will also be devoting its opening symposium in 2024, to open the new academic year, to the question of the place of women and gender in research.

Entitled " Gender and science ", it will be held on October 17 and 18 2024 and will aim to explore the multiple facets of the gender issue in the context of scientific research, to bring together data and experiences from a variety of disciplines, to analyze the mainsprings of women's participation - or lack thereof - in research over the centuries, and the stereotypes that have had to be combated. It will also address the question of gender as an object of science, bringing together contributions from different fields of research on these issues, from the point of view of sociology, history, law, biology, genetics and epigenetics.
