André Chastel (1912-1990)
André Chastel trained more than a generation of art historians and made a decisive contribution to the development of art history in France and its international influence. To mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, an international symposium is being organized by INHA in collaboration with the Centre André Chastel, the École Pratique des Hautes Études, the Collège de France, the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, the Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the Université de Paris-Sorbonne as part of the national celebrations. Focusing on public action, André Chastel's historical positions and his work at the crossroads of history, art history and cultural history, this colloquium will move away from commemoration to critically assess Chastel's multiple fields of intervention. This will shed new light on the evolution of the aims and methods of art history in the second half of the 20th century. The celebration of André Chastel's centenary will continue at INHA with an exhibition running from January 30 to April 6, 2013 (Galerie Colbert, Roberto Longhi room). It will pay tribute to the erudition and sensitivity of this great scholar, but also to the strength of conviction and breadth of vision of the teacher and public man.
