Institut Convergences Migrations launches digital magazine De Facto

To renew the link between science and society on the issue of migration, the Convergences Migrations Institute is launching De Facto, its new critical analysis column, and co-organizing a meeting on December 10, 2018 to open dialogue on the articulation between social sciences and migration policy.

Immigration has become a central topic of public debate, with the media playing a key role. The Institut Convergences Migrations (IC Migrations), headed by François Héran, Professor at the Collège de France and holder of the Migrations and Societies Chair, has set itself the objectives of deciphering current events by proposing a critical and constructive analysis, without falling prey to the clichés that proliferate on the causes and consequences of migration, establishing facts, apprehending orders of magnitude, and comparing situations rather than isolating them. To this end, the researchers at IC Migrations have decided to put a thematic dossier online each month, comprising an article, a filmed interview with a specialist, a graph putting the data into perspective, a commented image, a book review and a review of the international press.

The first dossier, published on November 15, looks at African migration from an original angle : the return home.

The next issue, to be published on December 10, will be devoted to the role of international organizations on mobility.

Furthermore, noting the lack of articulation between social science research and migration policies, IC Migrations, the Migrations and Societies Chair at the Collège de France, the Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire d'Évaluation des Politiques Publiques (LIEPP) at Science-Po and the Université Sorbonne Paris Cité (USPC) are jointly organizing a first meeting on December 10, 2018. High-level European researchers will be brought together to discuss the constitution of an International Expert Group on Migration and Asylum (GIEMA), modeled on the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).

This meeting will take place on December 10, 2018 at the Collège de France.
