The Administrator, the Board of Professors and the entire Collège de France community are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jacques Tits, Professor Emeritus at the Collège de France, who held the Group Theory Chair from 1973 to 2000.

They pay tribute to a professor who profoundly marked the Collège de France through his intellectual rigor and simplicity. His mathematical work, mainly in algebra and geometry, has had a decisive influence worldwide, and has been awarded the Wolf Prize in 1993 and the Abel Prize in 2008.
