La gouvernance par les nombres is the title of a book published by Fayard in 2015, which reports on a series of two lectures delivered at the Collège de France by Alain Supiot : the first was entitled " Du gouvernement par les lois à la gouvernance par les nombres " (2012) and the second " Les figures de l'allégeance " (2013).

Chaptered and illustrated, the film La gouvernance par les nombres (Governance by numbers), based on the book, is the result of a long interview with Professor Supiot. A synthetic presentation divided into seven chapters, it provides fluid access to a complex thought process that opens the doors to the history of law and the way in which mankind is governed. We discover how law, along with art and science, has always played a part in man's imagination, the veritable link between the real and the ideal that underpins civilizations. But the industrial imaginary has had its day, and today we are fully entering the era of the cybernetic imaginary, which responds to the old Western dream of harmony based on calculation. A discourse that aims for the efficient achievement of measurable objectives rather than obedience to just laws, leaving men, or states, no other way out than to pledge allegiance to something stronger than themselves, in defiance of social law. A veritable manifesto against the Total Market and the normative uses of economic quantification, this film is a formidable pedagogical tool that allows us to penetrate the arcana of the law, the dysfunctions that afflict Europe, and to better understand the institutional upheavals that are shaking up our times.
