Abstract

The term tj.tis most often associated with the meanings " image " and " writing sign ". This dichotomy of meanings could indicate that the semantic field of tj.t lies at the crossroads of the domains of image and word, uncertain of the lexical boundaries into which ancient Egypt sometimes plunges us.

This presentation will provide an opportunity to return to the deeper meaning of the term tj.t, in particular by questioning its etymology. This investigation should provide us with a few new clues as to what writing signs might have represented for the ancient Egyptians, and why the term tj.t is no longer used in the traditional sense of " image " .

Knowledge of ancient Egyptian essential.
