Abstract

Pascal Silberzan studies model tissues that are confluent monolayers of cells on a glass surface. His experiments show that these tissues can be considered as active systems, and that they display the characteristics expected of active matter : spontaneous flows, topological defects of active nematic systems. He showed how these active tissues can be manipulated by imposing external constraints to orient the cells. He also discussed the role of topological defects in inducing cell extrusion and the formation of cell multilayers.
