Abstract

In ancient Greece, the religious category of daímōn is much broader and, in many respects, differentiated from that of demon : it is, moreover, subject to processes of resemantization in different cultural historical contexts. This seminar explored the transformations of the notion of daímōn in Greek-language Jewish literature. These sources reflect the influence of representations of the demonic originating in the Levantine and Near Eastern world. At the same time, the cultural representations of daímōn/daimónion conveyed in Greek-language Jewish literature are constructed in explicit or implicit negotiation with more broadly Hellenistic religious beliefs and practices. They thus constitute an important turning point in the rapprochement between the notion of daímōn and that of " demon " as we know it today.
