Interactions between species in nature can lead to fluctuations in population sizes, as for example in a two-species predator-prey system. What dynamical behavior should we expect when many species are involved, as is often the case in nature? I will describe recent research efforts on this question, from models and theory to experiments. Relations to other fields, such as neural networks and glasses, will also be discussed.
