Abstract

The main aim of this talk is to deconstruct a myth built up by Valéry himself, especially through famous texts such as Monsieur Teste, that of a poet who read little and despised reading. His personal library - , a large part of which has been preserved and consists of numerous books, articles and memoirs on a wide variety of subjects - reveals a completely different reality : Valéry was a voracious reader. The three thousand books that make up Valéry's library, many of which retain a handwritten record of reading, show how the appropriation of numerous literary and scientific texts really worked. For Valéry, reading remains intimately linked to writing.
