Abstract

Ramin Golestanian's seminar reviewed theories on colloidal particles whose motion and hence activity are due to phoretic effects (thermophoresis, diffusiophoresis, etc.). A particularly interesting result is that, in many cases, if the description is made at the scale of colloidal particles, the interactions do not satisfy the principle of action and reaction. This leads to a new and highly unintuitive physics.
