Abstract
Our daily lives are constantly being turned upside down by the technological innovations of the digital world. However, the fundamentals of the digital world remain largely unknown to the general public, who seem constantly surprised by developments that are nonetheless foreseeable : this is the sign of a poorly-adapted mental schema. The aim of this opening lecture is to help build a common sense of computing, by explaining what scientific and technical concepts underpin the digital revolution, what tools it uses, and what its impacts and difficulties are.
