Abstract

The opening lecture on Thursday, November 6, 2014, entitled "Therapeutic innovation: developments and trends", set the general framework for developments and trends in the field of therapeutic innovations at the start of the 21st century. In developed countries, we currently have a life expectancy that has never been so long. For some of us, retirement is as long as working life. Advances in hygiene and medicine, and the reduction of many risks in professional and personal life, have enabled us to live longer. Reaching the age of one hundred is no longer reserved for a tiny minority of each generation. The availability of many effective medicines, often at prices lower than a pack of cigarettes, has largely contributed to this state of affairs, yet there is currently a certain unease about the field of medicines and therapeutic innovation, among both the general public and researchers.
