Abstract
Over the last forty years or so, we've witnessed a number of singular theatrical metamorphoses : they've boldly shaken up and overturned the traditions of the dramatic arts. Is it any wonder that, amid so many divergent models, audiences sometimes get lost ? What do they see ? Is it still theater ? Sometimes a show makes an impact by dividing audiences and critics. One camp attacks the director in the name of murdered art, the other acclaims him in the name of regenerated art. More than a century ago, Zola gave artists the following advice : " Whenever someone wants to lock you into a code by declaring : this is theater, this is not theater, reply bluntly : 'Theater doesn't exist. There are theaters, and I'm looking for mine." "
