Abstract

What can physics and chemistry tell us about the Mona Lisa's smile? High-performance, mobile and non-invasive analysis techniques, using X-rays, lasers or ultraviolet, visible and infrared light, now enable us to better understand the role of materials and pictorial techniques in Artistic creation. They also contribute to the appraisal and restoration of works of art, notably by restoring the brilliance of the original colors. Integral to a multi-disciplinary approach, physical chemistry takes us back in time and reveals the secrets of artists' studios, even going so far as to reconstitute the creative gesture.
