Lecture

Religious norms and questions of authority in the Greek world (2)

from to

Initiated as part of the 2020-2021 lectures, the reflection on Greek norms and authority in religious matters will be continued in 2021-2022, still in line with a study of lexis attentive to the nuances and evolution of word usage, from the Archaic to the Classical periods(eunomia, nomos, isonomia, hosiēand eusebeia). The background to this lexical investigation is a questioning of the place of the gods in the structuring of norms within the poleis, before the "reign of law" was imposed as witnessed by a thinker like Aristotle.

Finally, it is through epigraphic prescriptions in ritual matters during the Classical and Hellenistic periods that we will attempt to better understand the scope of " la norme " or " des normes " in the practice of those who honoured the deities in their many sanctuaries, as well as the interventions of the various authorities likely to ensure their application.
