In 1930, Mies van der Rohe became the third director of the Bauhaus, which he moved from Dessau to Berlin in 1932. His teaching methods were more focused on the professional training of architects than those of his predecessors Walter Gropius and Hannes Meyer. After having to close the school in 1933, he spent almost five years trying to find his place in Nazi Germany, increasingly marginalized as he lost competitions. Only a few unrealized housing projects allowed him to pursue his research, notably through exploring the resources of courtyard houses.
