We're all aware of the risks associated with tobacco, alcohol or a diet too rich in fats or sugars. We have been made aware of the importance of screening for high blood pressure, certain cancers and infectious diseases. What many people don't realize is that these recommendations are the result of epidemiological studies based on the follow-up of tens, even hundreds of thousands of individuals over many years. This lecture will give you the keys to understanding the methodological underpinnings of epidemiology, and will be illustrated by a presentation of the studies behind the main public health recommendations made to us today.
