After studying modern history at the ENS and EHESS, Carl-Loris Raschel turned to ancient history, with a particular focus on Egypt in the Roman and Byzantine periods. In 2015, he began a thesis at the EPHE on Egyptian professional associations under the Roman Empire. Defended in 2021, this work carried out under the supervision of Jean-Luc Fournet has enabled him to specialize in Greek and Coptic papyrological documentation, which forms the basis of his research. His interest also extends to Egyptian monasticism of Late Antiquity. After two years as a secondary school lecturer, Carl-Loris Raschel took up an ATER post at the Collège de France, under Prof. Jean-Luc Fournet (2020-2022). While there, he helped organize two exhibitions at the Collège, the first on papyrus in autumn 2021, the second on Champollion a year later, to mark the bicentenary of the deciphering of hieroglyphics. He returns to the Collège de France in autumn 2024, as part of a postdoctorate shared with the Musée du Louvre, to contribute to the study and enhancement of its papyrological collection.
