The serpent played an important role in the religious systems of the ancient Near East. This was also the case in the kingdom of Judah, where there was a statue of a serpent in the Jerusalem temple. The best-known snake in the Bible is the "tempter snake" in the story of Genesis, but many other texts also feature snakes.
