Biography

Sébastien Lecommandoux is Professor at Bordeaux INP and Director of the Organic Polymer Chemistry Laboratory (LCPO, UMR CNRS 5629). Since 2020, he has also been Editor-in-Chief of the leading scientific journal Biomacromolecules (ACS). He heads the " Auto-assemblages Polymères et Sciences du Vivant " team, whose research focuses on the design of bio-hybrid and bio-inspired polymers for biomaterials and pharmaceutical development, notably on the basis of the self-assembly of block copolymers based on polypeptides, proteins and polysaccharides.

His contributions range from the fundamental design of complex, hierarchical, multi-scale and multi-component macromolecular structures, to the elaboration of biofunctional and bioactive nano and microstructures. He pays particular attention to understanding the mechanisms that govern self-assembly properties and the influence of molecular structure or " code " in controlling the form, size and function of these systems, drawing inspiration from living organisms.

In particular, he has contributed to the development of polymersomes for controlled drug delivery and theranostics, as well as biomimetic approaches to the design of synthetic viruses and artificial cells.

His research has earned him the Seqens Prize from the French Academy of Sciences (2019), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry RSC (2017) and member of the Academia Europaea (2020). His interest in translational research led him to build and direct the joint LCPO-l'OREAL laboratory and to the creation of start-ups, most recently DOXANANO in 2023.
