Inequalities in health, which persist at a very high level in countries around the world, represent a major challenge for social justice. While this observation is unanimously shared by the scientific community, and numerous research studies have identified a number of social determinants of health, the social processes that produce these inequalities still need to be analyzed in greater depth, particularly from an intersectional perspective that articulates the social relations of power referring to gender, class and ethno-racial positions.
This symposium, organized by the Collège de France and the Gendhi (Gender and Health Inequalities) ERC research team, will compare theoretical models for analyzing the production of health inequalities, whether they focus on specific stages of this production (health damage, access to care, medical treatment), or propose a global approach. The heuristic character of these models will be examined through the prism of the results of the research that draws on them. This will include research in sociology, economics and social epidemiology, based on quantitative or qualitative data, and covering different national contexts. These exchanges will enable us to question public policies aimed at reducing these inequalities.
