Abstract
The presentation will discuss some aspects of premodern Swedish legal history from a comparative and European perspective. The development of law will be analyzed in the context of the political situation. Among the themes selected to highlight this approach: the early codification of national laws in the Middle Ages, the absence of feudalism in the true sense of the word, the importance of laymen acting as judges and lawyers, the political representation of the peasant state and the reforms needed during the period of the Swedish Empire.
