Opening symposium 2022 - Deciphering(s): from hieroglyphs to DNA

Opening symposium 2022-2023

On September 22 1822, Jean-François Champollion, in a state of extreme excitement, completed his famous Lettre à Monsieur Dacier, secrétaire perpétuel de l'Académie royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. In it, he explained how he had unraveled the mystery of Egyptian hieroglyphics : this is the founding text of their decipherment.

To celebrate the bicentenary of this event, the theme of this year's opening symposium  is " Déchiffrement(s) : des hiéroglyphes à l'ADN ".

Specialists will discuss the history of the deciphering of certain ancient scripts, as well as the problems of deciphering in many other fields : the sciences of the universe, biology, cryptography, linguistics and, finally, the hermeneutics and interpretation of works of art.

Organizing committee

Professors Dominique Charpin and Xavier Leroy with Professors Françoise Combes, Jean-Luc Fournet, Sonia Garel and William Marx.
