Abstract

Sleep is accompanied by an inert state which does not prevent the brain from continuing to process sensory information from the environment and internal representations in memory circuits. We will discuss the types of processing that can and cannot be maintained during sleep, and their impact on sleep quality and function. The study of sleepers' cognitive abilities paints a nuanced picture of sleep.
