Abstract

Roger Balian recalled how the transition from the full density operator to a reduced density operator leads to an entropy that increases in the course of time. By choosing increasingly precise reduced density operators, he showed that we end up with a hierarchy of entropies that interpolate between Boltzmann entropy (which grows over time as predicted by Theorem H) and Von Neumann entropy, which corresponds to the full density operator and remains constant over time.
