Begun immediately after the fire onApril15 2019, the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris has led to major discoveries, all the more important as the cathedral remained paradoxically little-known.
To accompany the gradual reopening of the cathedral to the public, the Musée de Cluny will be devoting two exhibitions toitfromNovember19 2024, one on medieval sculpture, the other on the library. Against this backdrop of great interest in the cathedral's heritage, and its central role not only in urban architecture, but also in the social, religious and political organization of medieval towns, this seminar aims to place Notre-Dame back in its historical context, and show the extent of new research carried out in recent years.
Indeed, the restoration project has been the occasion for intense interdisciplinary work, involving a wide range of scientific players from heritage institutions, universities and research. Between materiality and interdisciplinarity, this new cathedral of knowledge will be at the heart of this seminar.
