Abstract
Delivered in 2002 to mark the opening of the Climate and Ocean Evolution Chair, Edouard Bard's opening lecture has lost none of its topicality. It reminds us that global warming has long been a concern for part of the scientific community, which had already had a wealth of well-founded data for decades. Through a description of the history of the climate, the author combines the complementary approaches of paleoclimatology, oceanography and geology to better analyze and contextualize the global warming that the climate and oceans are undergoing today. This seminal text sounds like a warning that echoes contemporary concerns about the major climatic issues of our time.
