Abstract
Argumental semantics deals with " who does what to whom " in the event or state expressed by the sentence. Each sentence can be associated with a small mental scene, involving a small number of participants, the arguments. The different roles of the arguments can be characterized qualitatively by labels such as " agent ", " patient ", " theme ", " target ", etc.,Jackendoff and Gruber's" thematic roles ". Discourse scope semantics deals with the scope of operators (e.g. quantifiers) and articulations relevant to discourse organization, such as topical-commentary and focus-presupposition articulations. In this lecture, we will illustrate the syntactic means available to these interpretive systems, the relevant maps and the interfaces involved.
