Abstract

When he began work on Sainte-Beuve, Proust adopted a more scholarly approach to reading. Having always spoken ill of philologists, he adopted a classic research approach, combing the bibliography, taking precisely paginated notes, noting Sainte-Beuve's expressions and turns of phrase that appealed to him, even though the recorded quotations were often approximate. A re-reading of the Carnet 1 and the Cahiers Sainte-Beuve shows that Proust, far from having a limited and casual knowledge of the Port-Royal author, had carefully read his work.
