Abstract

Part of the reconstruction programs, the " Unité d'habitation de grandeur conforme " that Le Corbusier built in Marseille between 1946 and 1952 finally allowed him to materialize the project for a large apartment building with integrated services that he had formulated as early as 1922 with his " Immeuble-villas ".

Set between the sea and the hills, the Unité de Marseille also illustrates an ideal of Mediterranean architecture formed during his explorations of the Acropolis in Athens. Like the Parthenon, the Unité dominates the landscape of the bay and maintains visual links with the distance, above the level of the city.

At the same time, he embarked on a new reflection on housing with the Jaoul houses in Neuilly, set in the suburban landscape and informed by the arches of Mediterranean constructions, combined in this case with industrial brick.
